NOMRIZ project

New methods for traffic control in congestions in urban areas

Project type: Technology Agency of the Czech Republic, program Alfa

Time schedule: 2011-2014

Partners: ELTODO dopravní systémy s. r.o. (coordinator), Institute of Information Theory and Automation (UTIA) Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Faculty of Transportation Sciences, CTU in Prague

Project objectives:
To create, verify and transfer into commercial usage a prototype of small traffic central with open communication interface. The concept of the control algorithm will be based on the already verified concept of the macroscopic state model of traffic area, tested in real traffic. This model will be replaced by more detailed mesoscopic model, capable of more accurate processing of larger amounts of characteristics and transport indicators, e.g. inputs from telematic systems. It will enable higher quality of traffic situation prediction and responses to extraordinary states (e.g. traffic accidents). For the purposes of traffic control the system is about to optimize three basic signal plan parameters (green rate, offset and cycle length).

It is expected that this system will enable more fluent transit of vehicles through the controlled transport network and the results of the project such contribute to the higher throughput of the transport infrastructure. Reducing the congestions will lead to improvements in the environment, reducing the negative impact of transport to men, fauna and flora. It is also expected that more fluent traffic will have direct impact on the increase of traffic safety in the controlled area.
